I dreaded since last semester looking at the courses list to be taken this semester and that was after my eyes caught this course title, “Teaching the Language of Drama”. I could not help wondering if I am really going to do it (for heaven’s sake, I wished I don’t! But that perception has changed). That was not because of my fear for the language but my lack of exposure on this part of literature. Drama is not new for us students as we have studied Pygmalion and Macbeth during our foundation years. Yet, I would say we are less exposed and know few approaches in studying drama. Besides that, interest also does its part here. As for myself, I prefer more to read modern plays rather than classic plays in which the language of the former is much simpler and easier to understand compared to the latter. But, we can’t avoid when it comes to course requirement. So, I am doing this course with Dr Edwin this semester (I’m glad about it). Having him around did overcome my fear at least a little as I hoped his guidance will help me to improve myself throughout the course. The first lecture gave us a detailed introduction on the history of drama. I have never known all this in the previous courses. I realised we lack in a lot of information regarding the history of drama and its background. Being TESL students ourselves, we get the chance to learn this detailed explanation. What came up to my mind after that was how many other students out there knew about the history of drama and how many actually realised that it is significant in learning literature. Well, we are not to blame any individuals regarding this issue. As a future teacher of English literature, I told myself that I should expose my students to the world of theatre at least a little. I found the 1st lecture interesting though it was little boring for many of my classmates (it’s common because it was about history, (“,)).So this is how the journey of this course has begun and let’s see how it is going to be at the end of this semester. Dr Edwin is much appreciated in his guidance to us. I look forward to hear more from him and especially can’t wait to discuss the 1st play Oedipus the King. Thanks to you, Sir.
